If you’re looking for a new job and are preparing for interviews then it’s well worth heeding the advice drawn from a new UK survey. The survey, for CareerBuilder questioned over 100 UK business leaders to find out what would turn them off a potential candidate who they’re interviewing. Alarmingly one in ten said that nearly a third (32 per cent) of candidates had scuppered their chances by answering their mobile phone or texting mid-interview. While this may seem an obvious mistake to make, other interview no-nos tended to be less easy to anticipate. The most frequent mistake made was found to be not sharing information about specific accomplishments (57 per cent), while not asking good questions was also a common offender (51 per cent). If you’re gearing up for that all-important interview then also bear in mind recruiters’ common bugbears:

  • Criticising current or previous employers (32 per cent)
  • Appearing arrogant or disinterested (30 per cent)
  • Dressing inappropriately (30 per cent)
  • Providing too much personal information (23 per cent)
