When your boss is no other than 007 himself, does your working day revolve around perfecting the perfect martini and always having a fast car to hand? Executive PA Magazine meets Gareth Owen, PA to Sir Roger Moore
As you follow signs to Pinewood Studios it's hard not to be excited by the history of it all - this is where some of the best British films have been made. Before you are even through the entrance, the 007 stage looms large. It is still the largest sound stage in Europe and the Bourne films, Batman and Superman have all been filmed here.
I’m on a mission to find Sir Roger Moore's office, based in part of the original Pinewood Studios complex that was built in the grounds of Heatherden Hall, a rather beautiful Georgian mansion, bought by Charles Boot in 1935 to make into a film studio. Waiting for me will be Bond’s personal assistant - no not Miss Moneypenny, but Gareth Owen, Moore's PA for eight years to date, and Pinewood Studios is home to his office. Gareth came along to the Executive PA Magazine Awards ceremony and gala dinner in October and, well, we had to ask if he'd give us an interview.
When you first walk into the office the first thing that hits you is... stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. There are action figures of Connery, Brosnan and Moore, there's the CORGI Lotus Elite and a model of the space shuttle from Moonraker, all of them in pristine unopened boxes. Wondering whether Gareth is a bit of a Bond collector, Gareth explains: “No, we just get sent them, I think it's quite messy here but we keep getting sent more.”
There are also framed photos all over the walls: Moore with celebrities from all over the world; Moore as 'The Saint'; Moore as Lord Sinclair with Tony Curtis in The Persuaders and, of course, Moore as Bond. Gareth points out a picture with Timothy Dalton, George Lazonby, Piers Brosnan and Roger Moore: “Only Connery didn't turn up for that” Gareth announces. Hoping for a bit of scandal - or at the least some good natured competitiveness between the various 007s - I dig for more information, but am assured by Gareth that all the actors are great friends and rather tension between Connery and Eon Productions meant he skipped out on the photo opportunity.
Gareth’s desk’s top drawer is bursting with letters. “Fan mail” he says, “we get about 50 a week. People from all over the world write in, usually asking for a signed photograph. The main thing we have to watch out for are the eBayers - they'll write in asking for three or four signed photos, one for them, one for a girlfriend, one for a mother and one for a sister - who are all fans of course. In reality all four will appear on eBay in the next few days but I'm getting pretty good at spotting these now.”
So how do you land a job like this? Well, Gareth grew up in the Moore era of Bond movies (Moore starred in seven films between 1973-85 from Live and Let Die through to View to a Kill) and first met the man himself when he was writing Roger Moore, His Films and Career with co-author Oliver Bayan. At that time Doris Spriggs, Moore's PA for 29 years decided to retire so Moore asked him if he'd be interested in the job. For a Bond fan and a writer it didn't take too much thinking about: “It would give me a steady income and allow me time to continue my writing on quieter days” explains Gareth, something his new boss was completely relaxed about.
