It seems a PAs’ day is anything but routine… as the results of the Executive PA Magazine International Secretaries Day revealed. So, we wanted to give you a flavour of the responses we received. It seems many of you are lucky enough to work for highly appreciative bosses who truly value your efforts in the office. Just take a look at these examples of how you’ve been rewarded for your hard work:

“The nicest thing my boss has done for me was to throw a surprise 50th birthday party last year. He invited my close friends, work colleagues and even my previous boss of 14 years! The whole evening was delight. His wife had arranged the most beautiful flowers and table settings, along with checking the menu (never leave that to a man!). Every detail had been thought of even down to the cake bearing a photograph of me as a 1yr old sitting in a pram (cringe!). We all shared so much laughter that night and he gave a wonderful speech that really touched me and made me realise just how much he, and his wife, appreciate me. I feel so lucky to work for someone who is prepared to express himself in such a manner.” Moira

“My previous boss bought me a beautiful necklace from the States on her return from leave. It wasn’t my birthday or anything!” - A PA with over 15 years’ experience

“The nicest thing my boss has done for me is sent me a huge bunch of flowers to thank me for agreeing to become his PA!” - an Executive Assistant in Stafford

“My boss is actually pretty brilliant. We have very similar tastes and so I end up with lots of kitsch bits and pieces from around the world, including Elvis babushka dolls, a musical snow globe from Hawaii and an Elvis (are you sensing a theme?) magnetic dress up set. She has also paid for me to go to the Isle of Wight Festival this year - a full Camping ticket!” - A Manchester-based PA

“Everyone was bought chocolates to say thank you for an event we worked on. I had lost lots of weight sticking to Weight Watchers religiously so he organised for me to have flowers instead! And they were amazing flowers too! Very thoughtful.” - A PA working in PR

“The nicest, well that would be after the husband of a close friend died suddenly in New Zealand he offered to pay for me to go out there to support his wife and attend the funeral. Not many bosses would do that.” - PA in the accountancy sector

"Clive took me to see the rock group AC/DC (it was a sell out and I was bemoaning not being able to get tickets and he had managed to get some) - I must be one of the only PAs in Britain who attended a rock concert with her boss!” - Geraldine Hodder

“The nicest thing my boss has ever done for me was during a business trip to Stockholm. Knowing that I had never visited the city before, the directors I was traveling with organised for us to stay an extra day to go on a tour of the city, and also bought us front row tickets for the opera. A trip away from home for business was suddenly a whole lot nicer and I really felt valued for the hard work I had put in.” - A Manchester-based PA

“On my 50th birthday, I had booked a table at Somerset House for a meal with my family. When we arrived we were greeted with Champagne - we all looked at each other to see who had ordered this, but everyone denied it. However, my lovely boss at the time had rung up and ordered this for me. A very nice moment.” - A London-based PA in the Defence sector

“The nicest thing my boss has ever done for me is Marry Me…… we have now been married nearly 14 years.” - Lorna, PA

“My boss, David E Clare, has done many nice things for but the nicest thing I think he has ever done was on my 50th birthday. I really wanted my teeth whitened with the laser treatment but of course the cost was quite expensive for a mere PA like me. I was saving for quite a while and was about £200 short so he sent me a cheque for the £200, wishing me a Very Happy Birthday.” - Sue Tinker

“A fabulous female boss I had about four or five years ago turned up to work one day with two tickets for me and a friend/partner to go see Robbie Williams. Completely out of the blue. She’d heard he was playing Leeds and knew I liked him, so got me two tickets. No particular reason, she just knew I liked him. She was a fabulous boss and we remain friends.” - PA

“Included me in the annual salary review and bonus rewards when I’d only been with the company for two months – it wasn’t a lot of money, but most employers would have made me wait another year!” - PA working in Winchester with 25 years' work experience
