Now that winter’s arrived your daily commute is probably even less appealing – and research released to coincide with National Commute Smart Week reveals that British workers are wasting an astonishing 4.6million hours a day travelling to work.

The research report from Citrix GoToMyPC is calling for businesses to consider allowing workers to adopt smart commuting schemes to dramatically reduce travel time. According to the survey’s results:

• 62% of commuters want to reduce the time they spend travelling to and from work.
• 42% of travellers are frustrated by traffic jams and hold ups, 38% get annoyed by public transport issues, 36% hate travelling in the dark, while 30% cite the cost of travelling to work as a major headache.
• 46% of employees say that their boss won’t allow them to work from home or adopt flexible working practices.

If giving the opportunity it seems most workers would like some degree of flexibility in their working week so they can miss the usual rush hour madness and claw back some of their precious time. The survey also asked respondents what the most popular solution for smart commuting would be and found that 34% would like home working, 32% called for the use of technology to enable flexible and remote working, and 22% hoped that varying start and finish times would slash their usual commute time.
