There’s bad news on the way for anyone who has ditched the car in favour of using public transport. Rail commuters are facing huge increases in train fares, due to the ever-increasing cost of diesel and electricity. The new fares are due to come into effect from January 2009 and despite the Government’s RPI plus one formula some travellers may find tickets rise by ten per cent. The RBI plus one formula allows rail companies to put up fares by one per cent above the retail price index but some companies are expecting to be allowed to make bigger price hikes. Commuters travelling from East Sussex and Kent by Southeastern are likely to be amongst those hardest hit with rises of about eight per cent.
